Women, small child martyred in terrorist act in NW Iran
Tehran Times Political Desk

URMIA, West Azarbaijan Province -- A bomb blast in the northwestern city of Mahabad on Wednesday martyred at least 10 women and a small child and injured around 80 other people.

The incident happened at around 10:20 a.m. local time as women had gathered to watch a military parade commemorating the beginning of Sacred Defense Week in the city in West Azarbaijan Province. The bystanders were 50 meters away from the parade scene.

According to local sources, the bomb was hidden inside a bag placed on the branch of a tree near where some civilians were standing.

Dr. Hamid-Reza Omrani, a local medical official, said there is no exact figure about the number of injured so far.

No group or person has yet claimed responsibility for the bombing.

However, West Azarbaijan Province Governor General Vahid Jalalzadeh said counter-revolutionary elements were behind the deadly incident.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast told IRNA that the attack was orchestrated by the Zionist regime and its allies in an attempt to overshadow Iran’s military parades and its diplomatic achievements at the UN meetings in New York.

The victims of the attack were laid to rest on Wednesday.

Three days of mourning have been declared in for Mahabad and one day for West Azarbaijan Province.

Sacred Defense Week is an annual event commemorating the anniversary of the beginning of the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war. It begins on September 22, which is the day Iraq invaded Iran and began the imposed war on the country in 1980.
