TEHRAN -- A rare painting by renowned Iranian surrealist Iran Darrudi created 36 years ago was unveiled at the Jahan-Nama Museum of the Niavaran Cultural Historical Complex here on Wednesday.

Created in 1974, the untitled painting was previously kept at the Institute for Humanities and Cultural Studies and was spotted by an employee almost one month ago, said Shahrzad Pakniyat, an official of the Niavaran complex.

The artwork was kept beside several other artistic items at the institute and no one was aware of the valuable painting, she said, adding, “We were next informed about the item and it was later delivered to the museum.”

“The tableau painted in surrealistic style is one of Darrudi’s lily series of flowers in dark red and brown. It is estimated that the item was one of the paintings preserved in the royal collection,” she explained.

Iran Darrudi was not present at the unveiling ceremony of her masterpiece. “She is a resident of France and unfortunately she was not able to attend the ceremony.

“The masterpiece will be on display for a month and later be will transferred to the main palace of the complex for permanent show. The painting also needs to go through a restoration process,” she added.

Iran Darrudi was born in 1936. She studied art at Ecole Superier des Beaux-Arts in Paris, the history of art at the École du Louvre in Paris, stained glass at the Royal Academy of Brussels, and television direction and production at the RCA Institute in New York.

Darrudi’s first solo exhibition was held in Miami in 1958 at the invitation of the Florida State Art Center.

An exhibition featuring 207 of Darrudi’s masterpieces opened at the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art in May 2008.

In addition, a selection of her works went on show at Tehran’s Shirin Gallery last year.
